After a slow pit stop, Fangio, 46, caught and passed the Ferraris of Peter Collins and Mike Hawthorn on the Nordschleife in 1957. It was his last Grand Prix win and his fifth world championship.

Michael Johnson, in golden spikes, smashed the 200 m world record by a third of a second to complete a unique 200–400 double.

Johnson ran 19.32 seconds at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, three days after winning the 400 m, becoming the first man to win both at one Games. The stadium later became a baseball park.
