On 16 July 1950 Uruguay came from behind to beat Brazil 2–1 in Rio de Janeiro. Alcides Ghiggia scored the winner in front of a world-record crowd, and Brazilians still call it the Maracanazo.

Ray Harroun won the first running of a famous 500-mile race, using one of the first rear-view mirrors.

Harroun averaged about 75 mph in his Marmon Wasp to win the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911, driving without a riding mechanic and using a mirror to watch the traffic behind him.

Bob Beamon's long jump of 8.90 m beat the world record by 55 cm, a mark that stood for almost 23 years.

Beamon's leap at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, helped by the thin air at altitude, broke the record by so much that the optical measuring device could not reach it. It stood until 1991.

A rookie Ayrton Senna was closing in on Alain Prost in the rain when the race was red-flagged at half distance.

Senna, in an unfancied Toleman, was catching race leader Prost on the street circuit in 1984 when officials stopped the race after 31 laps. Prost won, and only half points were awarded.

Shane Warne's first ball in an Ashes Test drifted and spun past Mike Gatting's bat to clip the off stump.

In June 1993 Warne's very first delivery in Ashes cricket drifted to leg, then turned sharply to hit Gatting's off stump at Old Trafford in Manchester. It became known as the Ball of the Century.
