In the 1986 World Cup quarter-final Maradona scored twice in four minutes against England: the 'Hand of God' and a solo run later voted the goal of the century. Argentina won 2–1 and went on to lift the trophy.

Ford finally beat Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans with a 1–2–3 finish. A staged photo finish cost Ken Miles the win on a technicality, a story told in the film Ford v Ferrari.

Ayrton Senna passed four cars on a wet opening lap, often called the greatest first lap in Formula One history.

Senna dropped to fifth at the start of the 1993 European Grand Prix but led by the end of lap one, then won in changing conditions, lapping everyone except runner-up Damon Hill.

Aravinda de Silva's unbeaten century beat Australia and won Sri Lanka their first Cricket World Cup.

Sri Lanka chased 242 to beat Australia by seven wickets in the 1996 World Cup final in Lahore, the first final played under floodlights. De Silva made 107 not out and took three wickets.
