Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah won three home gold medals in under an hour on 'Super Saturday'.

On 4 August 2012 Ennis won the heptathlon, Rutherford the long jump and Farah the 10,000 m within 46 minutes at the London Olympics. Farah added the 5,000 m a week later.

Ali's 'rope-a-dope' tactics beat the favourite Foreman before about 60,000 fans in Kinshasa, then Zaire, in October 1974. The fight started at 4 am local time for American television.

Leading by three on the 72nd hole of the 1999 Open, van de Velde took a triple-bogey seven after his ball found the grandstand and the Barry Burn. Paul Lawrie won the four-hole playoff.

Lauda, back racing weeks after a near-fatal crash, withdrew in the deluge at the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji. Hunt's third place won him the championship by one point.
